Wiletta Mayer, a seasoned Black actress, has spent a lifetime playing the roles she's been given—mammies, maids, and other demeaning stereotypes—while longing for the chance to portray something more. During rehearsals for a new Broadway-bound production, a multigenerational cast of Black actors finds itself navigating the demands of a white director and stage manager.
